Low Sodium Taco Seasoning

After using Ortega taco seasoning practically my whole life, I sought to create a recipe that would mimic it 100%, without all the chemicals, sodium, and other tidbits of yuck that are found in pre-made seasoning packets. So go ahead, use this recipe once. I dare you. You'll never go back to buying those crummy, old, and expensive packages of dust again.

Low Sodium Taco Seasoning

1 T chili powder
2 t onion powder
1 t cumin powder
1 t garlic powder
1 t paprika
1 t oregano

I mix this blend with one pound of meat, whether ground beef, ground turkey, or shredded chicken. I also add about 1/2 c of water to help the flavors 'sink in' a little better and create a nice yummy sauce that thickens on its own as you cook it down.

I use this recipe VERY often, mainly for making tacos. This makes 3 tablespoons of taco seasoning, the same as you find in those traditional seasoning pouches that cost anywhere from 99 cents to $2-3, depending on where you shop and what brand you use. I compare this one to Ortega's seasoning, very 'cumin-y'. Yum!

I recommend making this in several batches, as then you will have the convenience of scooping out three tablespoons and being done with it, especially on those nights. You know...'those nights'...where nothing else seems to be going right and you just got home from work and you're tired and you don't WANT to cook and you WANT to hit McDonald's drive thru. Just do it. You'll see.

Shown in the picture is my take on taco soup, using my seasoning recipe.
Recipe will be featured soon!
